Make Your Laminate Floor Last – Care and Maintenance

Laminate flooring is among the most easily maintained and cared-for options on the market.  However, it does require that you provide regular care and maintenance and even take some preventative steps to maximize its lifespan, durability and looks.  What should you do to protect your laminate floor?  Can you wax it?  Can it be cleaned with scouring powder?  Should you refinish your laminate floor if it becomes scuffed or marked up?

General Maintenance Issues

Your laminate floor should be swept on a regular basis to remove loose dirt and dust from the surface.  In addition, you can mop it as frequently desired.  However, do not use water directly on the floor.  This can lead to large amounts of standing water that can seep between the cracks of the flooring, into your subfloor.  When mopping, only use a damp mop and a gentle cleanser.  Never use scouring powders, wire brushes or anything else that could damage the surface of your laminate.

If your laminate flooring becomes dull, do not wax it or varnish it.  Clean it with a gentle cleanser and water.  If this does not bring back the shine, you may need to replace that portion of the floor.  Refer to your manufacturer's guidelines at this point.

Preventative Issues

Your laminate floor can stand a great deal of abuse and traffic.  However, a few preventative measures will help it last longer and look better.  If you have laminate flooring installed in a high-traffic area, consider using a throw rug or an area rug. High heel shoes, pet nails and cleats can damage your floors; avoid wearing high heel shoes or cleats on your floors.  In addition, keep your pet's nails trimmed at all times.  Finally, glides can be added to the feet of furniture and to the bottom of tables and chairs to help avoid scuffing your floors when these are moved.

Following these brief tips will help you care for your laminate floor and will give you a long-lasting flooring solution that looks great for years to come.
