Choosing the Right Garage Flooring For Your Needs

When it comes to the options available to you for garage flooring, one of your biggest questions should be “What’s going to work for my needs?”

The intended functionality of the room is the key to making the right choice.  You don’t want to be replacing it again in a year because you didn’t entirely think through what you wanted to do with the space. Your choices include everything from fast and temporary to permanent and durable enough for the long haul. Here is a breakdown of several garage flooring choices, as well as the needs they best suit.

1. Floor mats:  Light duty use

Interlocking floor mats are easy to install, and also easy to remove if your needs change. They provide a small amount of cushion for the floor as well as a nice, pleasant surface.  This is a great option for a garage that is used for storage, a child’s activity area, craft room or any other non-intensive use.

 2. Cement garage flooring:  Medium duty use

Once installed, a cement garage floor provides you with a continuously solid surface that can withstand heavy traffic. Though often prone to chipping, a cement floor is a great option for medium duty uses such as a workshop, construction area or vehicle storage. It is also a great option for garaged constructed on uneven ground, as it will settle as a flat and even surface.

3. Polyaspartic floor coating:   Heavy duty use

Polyaspartic garage flooring will require a professional installation, but once installed it will provide a very long lasting and durable surface. Stain and scratch resistant, this surface can handle a maximum amount of traffic with a minimal amount of wear and tear. Polyaspartic coatings are great for a full working shop or vehicle repair, and it will last well into the future with no maintenance whatsoever.

Choosing a garage surface is really only half the battle. To ensure that you will be able to utilize your garage area for years to come without flooring problems, it’s important to base your decision on what you will expect the floor to withstand over time. Making the right choice will mean that you will have a working area without the hassle of trying to maneuver your needs around a poor or unrealistic flooring surface.
