Let’s Talk About Tile—a Block by Block Description

Tile refers to a thin piece of hard-wearing material.  Types of tile may include ceramic, stone, metal or glass, though some other lightweight tiles have been made of wood or even mineral wool.  Floor tiles are usually made of ceramic or stone and painted or glazed to a perfect pattern or solid color. 

How are these pieces created?  Tiles are set into a mortar made from sand, cement and latex additives, which allow for stronger adhesive properties.  Tiles are stacked together and the spaces in between are usually filled with grout.  Should you decorate your home with flooring tiles?

The advantages of tiles are primarily aesthetic.  Stone tiles are very beautiful and bring a distinctive ambiance to the room.  There are also numerous styles, shapes, colors and designs that you can choose from.  Tile flooring has been around ever since the Middle Ages and still fascinates people today.  Another advantage of tile is that it holds up to traffic very well, provided you continue to maintenance the floor when appropriate.  Quality tile sets can last a lifetime and beyond.

That said, there are some precautions to keep in mind.  Stone tiles can be slippery and thus potentially dangerous when compared to softer flooring materials.  Some tiles can be stained by liquids and must be sealed and resealed over a period of time.  Not all natural stone tiles will be uniform in color, as variations often occur.  Finally, some floor tiles can be heavy and prone to breakage.
