Considering Different Stone Flooring Options

Stone flooring is a good choice for almost any room in the home as well as for an entryway. Like many other flooring options, there are many different types of stone flooring and it is important for consumers to understand the different advantages as well as drawbacks of those options when making a final decision.

Marble is the most classic option available in stone flooring. Marble flooring is available in blocks, sheets and tiles as well as in a variety of different patterns and colors. Marble is mined from quarries and is a completely natural product. In its natural state marble can be susceptible to damage from moisture and stains, but it is typically sealed for protection. Once the sealant is applied, marble can be actually easy to maintain and clean.

Granite is another stone flooring option that consumers can choose from. Granite is also available in blocks, sheets and tiles. There are not quite as many colors available in granite as in marble, but granite does offer a host of colors that are warm and neutral which may be ideal for many consumers. Granite comes from mineral rock and contains mica, feldspar and quartz. Compared to all of the different stone flooring options, granite is typically the most expensive option. Granite will need to be sealed to protect it.

Slate is not as popular as granite or marble but it is quite durable provided that it is sealed properly. Slate is available in sheets and tiles. It is typically available in colors that are dark and muted. Slate is also natural and is mined from the ground. Consumers should keep in mind that a natural grain slate will involve additional care and cleaning compared to a honed finish.

Provided that it receives proper sealing, most types of stone flooring can be resistant to stains and moisture and will not easily show wear and tear. For the most part, polishing will only need to be done on a periodic basis.
